InSITE: Updated Schedule on Web and other Important Details

Please print this email and read it carefully.

NEW COPY OF SCHEDULE

We have put a new copy of the preliminary schedule on the web. You can access it from the home page http://Insite.nu or directly at http://2009.informingscience.org/Schedule.htm This copy has links to the PDF files of all the papers so you can access and read the ones that interest you. (When you open some papers you may see a message about a missing font. This is caused by some quirk in Adobe, but the papers display as they should so you can ignore the message. We are in the process of fixing this.)

We know that some of you are still waiting to hear about funding and/or travel visas. We and fellow delegates prefer to have no empty spots for the presentations, so please let us know if for any reason you will not be able to attend. We will then be able to make minor adjustments to the schedule.

THURSDAY, 11 JUNE - STUDY TOUR

There are still some spaces on the June 11 pre-conference tour. If you wish to spend time with fellow delegates learning about the history and people of Macon, please sign up right away. The cost is $40 per person and information about it is at http://2009.informingscience.org/studymission.htm . To sign up, please visit http://tiny.cc/LogBackIn and correct your profile.  We need a final count as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please contact us.

FRIDAY 12 JUNE - WORKSHOPS AND GARDEN TOUR

Macon State College is known for its lovely gardens and has just re-landscaped part of their campus. We are offering a free 1-hour guided tour of the gardens on Friday morning. Following that, we are presenting a series of workshops that are open to all delegates at no charge. While you do not need to register for this garden tour or the workshops, it will help us if you can let us know by email if you are planning to attend any of these so we can arrange for transportation between the Ramada and Macon State College during the day.

GROOME SHUTTLE FROM ATLANTA AIRPORT TO MACON

Thank you to those who have told us you plan to use the shuttle. If you have not done so, please let us know so Groome can ensure that they will have enough vehicles at the appropriate times.

Directions to Groome Pick-Up Area at Atlanta Airport

After claiming your baggage at Terminal North or Terminal South baggage claim, follow the signs toward Ground Transportation / MARTA. Exit the terminal through Door W1 or Door W2 and follow covered walkway to the left. The walkway will lead you past the construction zone on your right and down a slight decline. Groome Transportation is located on the Green Row in the non-metro pick-up area. Just look up for the green cubes. Groome will pull into one of the spaces numbered 15 and 16 about 15 minutes prior to departure time and must pull out promptly as scheduled due to time limits placed by the Atlanta Airport.

Click here for a map of the airport.

Schedule at http://www.groometransportation.com/schedule_macon_warnerrobins.php

Contact number for Groome (Toll free from within the US): 800-537-7903

To receive a $5 discount, be sure to tell Groome that you are with the InSITE conference. You can pay by Visa, MasterCard, or American Express credit cards or by cash.

CONFERENCE VENUE

Most conference activities will be held in the new Professional Sciences Building on the Macon campus of Macon State College. The presentation rooms are equipped with computers and projectors and are connected to the Internet. The presentation rooms all have the latest versions of Microsoft Office programs.

A map of the campus is on the web at http://www.maconstate.edu/maps/docs/newcampusmap.pdf We suggest you print this and bring it with you. The best access to the Professional Sciences Building (section B4 of the map) is from the West Campus Parking Lot and through the Jones building.

PARKING PERMITS

If you will be driving a car to the campus, you will need a parking permit. We have put a copy of the permit on the web. If you need one, let us know and we will send you the URL and password. Since you need to print this and put it in the back of your car, print it before you leave! To drive to the campus from the Ramada, go north on Chambers Road and make a left turn onto the Eisenhower Parkway – Highway 80. Continue west under the I-475 freeway, past Romeiser Road, and turn right at the Macon State College main entrance. Keep to your left and park in the West Campus parking lot.

TAXI COMPANIES

Should you need to use a taxi, the following two companies have been recommended to us:

Radio Cab – (478) 781-0076 and Yellow Cab – (478) 742-6464

POWER-POINT PRESENTATION SUGGESTIONS

Paper presentations should be about 20 minutes to leave time for questions and discussion. We have placed some tips for creating PowerPoint presentations on the web at http://tiny.cc/PPTtips (or http://2009.informingscience.org/docs/PPTTipsForPresenters4.ppt).  A link to this is also on the conference home page. Thank you to S. L. Shea and Namdar Mogharreban for letting us modify and use their work.

HOW TO CONTACT US DURING THE CONFERENCE

Email is the best way to reach us (EliCohen@InformingScience.org). Should you need to reach us by phone, you can do so between June 6 and 18 at this mobile phone number: +1 (707) 694-3567. Before or after those dates, use our regular phone number in California of +1 (707) 537-2211.  Also, you can reach us by email or by Skype (ID EliBCohen).

OTHER BITS OF INFORMATION

How formal should you dress?

We are often asked, “What is the dress code?” We respond “casual business.” Suits are more formal than necessary; slacks or skirts with shirts or blouses are fine. It may be cool inside, so bring a jacket or sweater.  Computer science people, put on a shirt and long pants.  Business people, take off your tie and jacket.

Weather

Although the buildings will be air conditioned, it probably will be quite warm outside during the day so we suggest that you bring a hat and sunscreen. Rain is not typical, but you never know.

Tipping

In the US it is customary to tip waiters, taxi drivers, and others who perform services. For meal services, the tip should be 15-20% of the total charge because the wait staff needs their tips to make ends meet. For taxi drivers and baggage carriers, a dollar or two is usually appropriate.

Sales Tax

Sales tax is added to most purchases within the US. The tax varies from place to place. In Macon, the current sales tax is about 7%.  This means if an item is priced $5, you will be charged something like $5.35 since the sales tax is added when the purchase is made.

Electrical Power

The electrical service is 110 volts, so be sure any electrical devices you bring can run on 110. You will also need a plug adaptor for US electrical outlets.

All the best,

=eli and Betty
Eli Cohen and Betty Boyd
